What is Laser Cut Sheet Metal Fabrication?

Laser cut sheet metal fabrication uses a high-powered laser beam to cut, engrave, or shape metal sheets with exceptional precision. Because it’s a non-contact cutting process, the laser produces smooth, clean edges without warping or distorting the material, which is something traditional cutting methods often struggle with.

how does the laser cutting process work laser cut sheet metal fabrication

How does the Laser Cutting Process Work?

The laser cutting process begins with your CAD file, which is uploaded to our system. Here’s a breakdown of the process:

  1. Design & Upload: You provide a CAD file, which can include dxf, ipt, or sldprt formats, depending on your project requirements.
  2. Programming: Using nesting software, we generate the cutting path and optimize material usage to reduce waste.

What Materials Can Be Laser Cut?

Laser cut sheet metal services can handle a broad range of materials. These include:

  • Mild Steel: Commonly used for structural and general fabrication.
  • Stainless Steel: Offers excellent corrosion resistance for demanding environments.
  • Aluminum: Lightweight and strong, ideal for industries like aerospace and automotive.
  • Copper & Brass: Perfect for electrical components and decorative items.

Laser Cut Sheet Metal
Fabrication FAQs

Laser cutting is ideal for intricate designs and precise cuts, while CNC cutting is better for simpler, high-volume runs. CNC cutting encompasses several versatile options, including milling, routing, turning, plasma, and waterjet – which offers varying options for complex 3D geometries. Laser cutting provides greater flexibility and detail for complex 2D geometries.

Highly reflective metals like gold and silver, and ceramics or certain plastics, are not ideal for basic CO2 laser cutting, although modern fiber and specialized lasers are capable of cutting reflective metals. Plastics like PVC should not be laser cut using CO2 either, as they will release toxic fumes.

The main limitation of laser cutting is its difficulty with materials thicker than 1 inch. For thicker metals, plasma cutting or waterjet cutting may be more effective.
